About Ilya Kashnitsky

I am a demographer. The topic that unifies all my research activities is population dynamics — the multifaceted exploration of the factors that define the speed and characteristics of population change and the societal effects that they cast. I started with an emphasis on internal migration and how it reshapes local population structures (papers in Cities, Educational Studies Moscow, and GeoJournal). Later I proceeded to analyse full population dynamics at the sub-national level, focusing on population ageing and depopulation and the challenges they pose for the welfare states and regional cohesion (papers in The Lancet, Population Studies, TESG, and Genus; PhD dissertation). At the postdoc level, I focused more on mortality analysis and new methods development (papers in PNAS, Demographic Research, BMJ Open). With the outbreak of the c19 pandemic, my research focus shifted towards the evaluation of the ongoing mortality shock (papers in World Development, Nature Human Behaviour, International Journal of Epidemiology, BMJ Global Health, and BMC Medicine). Following this involvement in the c19 debate I took part in expert panel discussions and co-authored Population Europe’s Policy Brief which was discussed at the top EU level. I participated in the Technical Advisory Group on COVID-19 Mortality Assessment, a joint initiative of the WHO and UN. My latest research focus in on small area demographic estimation.A proponent of Open Science, I promote transparent and replicable research practices. These efforts were recognized with the European Association for Population Studies' Outreach Award. I teach workshops and intensive courses on Data Visualization. I am a board member of the recently revived Danish Demographic Society (https://demografi.dk) – we are proudly bringing demography back to Denmark.
