Bring your shiny new technology back to the dealership, I'm here to salvage the wreck and dust off the old mainframe for one more adventure. For over 20 years I've been [re]building automated systems (human + machine processes) to get work done. Emphasis on automated systems getting work done. I've fixed a lot of stuff, counseled a lot of unholy technological marriages, made a lot of mistakes, capitalized on a lot of second chances, and with the help of a somewhat-trustworthy robot found some nasty gunk on the bottom of the sea. Yes, I can operate the equipment. No, I don't have a license. No, I've never taken one of these apart before. Yes, this sort of thing usually works when I do it. Yes, I'll consult the manual if you have it, but I can already see where the previous owner put it together wrong. No, software is no different. No, human processes are no different. Take your clipboard and go home, we're going to get work done here.Messages with pictures of the most unique machine in your shop get responded to first.

Senior Devops EngineerDrizly Oct 2018 - Nov 2021Boston, Massachusetts, UsDevOps: built out Jenkins CI/CD capabilities to serve 40 engineers. Brought 120 repositories up to a standard of unit tests, static analysis, security scanning, integration tests, and automatic artifact deployment (to GemFury and AWS ECR). Tightly integrated with GitHub.SRE: founding member of the SRE team, built out the majority our incident response & management protocolsInfrastructure: maintained infrastructure-as-code in Terraform and Ansible.Helped bring this startup to a $1.1Bn valuation. COVID arguably helped more though.Smoked an entire brisket every month or so to share with the office at lunch. -
Systems Automation EngineerWayfair Sep 2016 - Sep 2018Boston, Ma, UsIntroduced the organization to TestRail (integrating it into 3 automated testing frameworks, plus the internal Project Tracker system). Scaled it to 850 users. Reduced QA deadline overruns from 5-10 days to 1-2.Managed 7 QA analysts and supported 16 QA contractors who tested mobile apps.Designed, implemented, and launched 5 Slack integrations.Organized InnerSource documentation and practices for the company. -
Ios Test EngineerPaypal Nov 2013 - Sep 2016San Jose, Ca, UsCreated the quality system -- the processes, tools, and software -- for the software behind a mobile payments (EMV credit card) app on iOS. Open-sourced 3 (Apache-licensed) projects related to automated testing.Built a robot to perform automated testing on the hardware component of an iPhone app that handles untold dollar amounts per year.Designed an office mini golf course and built its functioning windmill. -
Research Software EngineerMassachusetts Institute Of Technology Jan 2011 - Nov 2013Cambridge, Ma, UsDeveloped SOA components for the Ocean Observatories Initiative's Cyberinfrastructure, supporting collection and storage of geographical data on a global scale.Developed key improvements to the MOOS autonomy middleware to enable content-centric networking between mobile autonomous agents.Developed sensor applications to improve AUV and USV navigation, tools for standardizing and visualizing inter-process information flow, and tools for greater ease of launch and shutdown of autonomy components.Updated the build system for a 1980s-era FORTRAN acoustics simulator, to take advantage of modern build tools and cross-platform configurability.Assisted graduate students and post-doctoral researchers with software architecture and testing. -
Research Engineer (Software Systems Engineer)Massachusetts Institute Of Technology Mar 2009 - Jan 2011Cambridge, Ma, UsSupported the work of marine biologists by leading AUV expeditions to conduct exploratory photographic surveys of the ocean floor, usually 5-50 miles off the coast of Massachusetts.Wrote vehicle and sensor control code for the MOOS software suite in C++ and Python, including a helm process that allowed the scripting of vehicle missions in Lua using continuation-passing style.Wrote data-analysis tools that allowed high volumes of data to be processed quickly by the operator (myself) in the field. Roughly 1 GB of image data and 100 MB of vehicle data collected in a 30 minute dive could be accessed and understood in as little as 4 minutes over a 30 kB/s radio modem. Wrote operator utilities in PHP that integrated with Google Earth: mission playback, realtime display of AUV and ship position, and a mission planning tool.Handled logistics of field expeditions, including truck rental, lodging, boat charters, and the packing and transportation of support equipment.Ensured that the number of recoveries remained equal to the number of deployments. -
Software Systems EngineerAutonomous Undersea Systems Institute Apr 2008 - Feb 2009Created the first-generation http://auvac.org website (PHP/MySQL), which included an AUV database and search tool. This site attained a very strong rank in most searches for AUV-related information.Created SQLite 3 database application in C to run on an AUV and store collected data. Wrote CGI scripts in C to display AUV data in both tabular and Google Earth formats.Performed field operations and testing with AUSI's Solar AUVs.
