Responsible for the software architecture for Digital Home Control Terminals (DHCTs), more commonly known as set-top boxes. This includes new features for existing products as well as completely new products, such as OCAP, NGNA, middleware, applications, and system software (operating systems and device drivers). Led the transition from legacy set-top architecture to open system using Linux operating system and MIPS 24K processor. Also responsible for the software development process used by S-A software engineers for set-top development, including successful completion of ISO 9000 audits.

Responsible for the development of application software for the SA DHCT for deployment of interactive digital television outside of North America including the largest cable company in Japan. My responsibilities included:- Building the initial international software development organization- Directing the activities of ~50 person (5 managers, ~45 developers) distributed development team (in Japan, California, Huntsville, Lawrenceville and Belgium) with a wide variety of experience levels- Managing schedules and development activities for the entire software development team; all contractual software and hardware milestones were met, triggering payments to S-A of approximately $1 million- Developing “creative” solutions to staffing challenges (i.e. not enough people and too much work)- Delivering presentations to customers and executives - Internationalization of the PowerTV operating system

Responsible for firmware for modem and network management products. Managed team of 10 that developed communications products. Hired new members of the team, and together delivered firmware for a wide variety of products including:- 6 megabit, burst-mode DSL CPE modem based on MPC 860 CPU- Multi-channel CO modem based on MPC 860T processor- Shelf processor including an RTOS and TCP/IP protocol stack- Microburst Mini IP DSLAM with DHCP relay and T-1 backhaul- Cost reduced CPE modem with USB interface based on MPC 850 processorResponsibilities included $1.5M annual budget, project scheduling, manpower loading, performance reviews, staffing, and product planning. Technical contributions included firmware development (porting modem code to new CPU and rewriting boot code), architectural guidance, design and code reviews, debugging assistance, and mentoring. Interacted with product line management, sales and business development to determine priorities and manage projects.

Responsible for all software and firmware development efforts including uni- and multiprocessor Macintoshes, CPU upgrades & imaging products:• Negotiated numerous licensing contracts with Apple and others. Worked with attorneys, reviewed & approved final contracts of over $1M.• Managed numerous software developers who wrote application and system software for the Macintosh. Responsibilities included product scheduling, budgeting, technical guidance, and performance appraisals.
