About Ivan Lu

After graduating the University of California, San Diego with a degree in Biochemistry/Cell Biology, I am applying my educational knowledge as a research assistant performing cell based assays. Cellular level mechanisms and interactions fascinate me -- what allows the various, independent cells to form a cohesive and functional system? Throughout my time at UC San Diego, this curiosity for the emergent effects of the microscopic on the macroscopic has been kindled and nurtured. I am always seeking to learn and experience more from the world around me.On a broader scale, my goal is to contribute to the larger benefit of those around me. Finding a career in a field that stays relevant and impactful is very important to me. I believe that in the current era, compassion and empathy are two virtues that cannot be underestimated. It has always been my hope that one day I can use my background and training to truly change people's lives.

    During this Internship, I shadowed a visiting research scholar at the Banner Health Podiatry Clinic and observed as he collected bacterial samples from patients with diabetic foot ulcers. I acquired knowledge on negative pressure wound therapy, platelet-rich plasma in wound therapy, and bilayed acellular matrix grafting. At the end of the internship I was able to present a poster on the upcoming field of treating diabetic foot ulcers. I was also able to spend time in the Genomics Core at the University of Arizona and learned various cell culturing skills. I was also able to learn about GeneChip technology and DNA sequencing.
