I directed the Computer Assisted Surgery and Therapy laboratory in the Rutgers University, which focuses on development of ultrasound-based image guided surgery and therapy systems. Specifically we are aiming to: - Improve surgical accuracy and functional outcome - Reduce costs (Surgical, Therapy, Hospitalization) - Promote new technology in image guided surgery and therapy -Provide innovative technological solutions for understanding, treatment and monitoring of disease. All our projects involved algorithm development, extensive engineering validation, animal-cadaver-human validation studies. We incorporate lessons learned from areas such as medical image analysis, machine learning, deep learning, medical device development and surgical systems interfaces (robotics, tracking devices, user interface design, clinical system investigation and validation). Our group actively collaborates with industry and clinicians (surgeons, radiologist).
Postdoctoral Fellow
Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, Research Engineer
• Developing new methods for feature enhancement from ultrasound images using compressed sampling. These extracted features would provide important information for image guided applications such as orthopaedics (spine, femur, pelvis), biopsy (needle insertion), brachytherapy (seed detection) • Developing sparse recovery techniques for fast ultrasound image acquisition and image enhancement. Specifically for this project I am interested in the application of ultrasound imaging for soft tissue interventions such as prostate, liver, kidney, soft tissue sarcomas. • Working on the integration of ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT) and marker based motion analysis, which will permit the development of patient-specific biomechanical models of hip anatomy and function to be used to better plan surgical procedures. Specifically I am interested in femoro-acetabular impingement (FAI) surgeries. • Developing fast, real-time, multi-modal image registration method for image guided surgery applications. • Conducting a clinical study at the Vancouver General Hospital (VGH, Vancouver, BC, Canada) where three dimensional (3D) ultrasound imaging modality is used for the first time for fracture assessment in the operating room.• Conducting a clinical study at the University of British Columbia Hospital (UBC, Vancouver, BC, Canada) where three dimensional (3D) ultrasound imaging modality is used for the assessment of impingements of the femur. • Developing new image processing approaches for accurate and automatic extraction of bone surfaces from 3D ultrasound images to characterize the infant hip in developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Conducting clinical studies at the British Columbia Children’s Hospital (Vancouver, BC, Canada) to validate the developed method.• Developing new and robust image processing methods that allow automatic and fast registration of bone surfaces of spine extracted from freehand ultrasound scans.• Supervision of M.Sc. students.
