After many years in academia as both the student and working on a doctoral thesis, I'm eager to see what the wider world has to offer. Studying life sciences has taught me to appreciate complexities of systems with multiple interactions both in macro and micro levels, while at the same time my new studies in computer sciences has shown me the beauty of more mathematical approach to problems.I took part in multiple different research projects in the university. In addition to working in the laboratory detecting viruses using PCR and growing them in cell cultures, I was lucky to participate in many field trips. I traveled to Kenya to collect mosquitoes for viral detection, drove through Lapland in search of ticks and attended field surveys of Glanville fritillary butterfly and powdery mildew in Åland, just to name a few. My own PhD project was about coronaviruses in Finnish bats, which we were able to find and from which I got my first first-author academic publication. This project also lead me more and more towards statistics, bioinformatics and programming, reshaping my plans for the future.Currently I'm hard at work learning more about algorithms, programming languages and software development to acquire necessary skills to tackle some of the problems we as a society are facing. I don't see apps and technologies as silver bullets themselves, but as very useful tools when applied correctly, all the while keeping environment, people and future generations in mind. I'm lucky to have the opportunity to do exactly this in my current position in Conservation Biology Informatics Group at The Finnish Museum of Natural History.
