With specialized techniques, XRD can be used to:determine crystal structures using Riveted refinement. 5.Determine of modal amounts of minerals (quantitative analysis). 6.Characterize thin films samples by: determining lattice mismatch between film and substrate and to inferring stress and strain. 7.Determining dislocation density and quality of the film by rocking curve measurements. 8.Measuring superlattices in multilayered epitaxial structures determining the thickness, roughness and density of the film using glancing incidence X-ray reflectivity measurements. Make textural measurements, such as the orientation of grains, in a polycrystalline sample.

Enhanced Oil and gas, extraction and recovery Primary recovery when the pressure falls, artificial lift technologies, such as pumps, are used help bring more fluids to the surface. In some situations, natural gas is pumped back down the well underneath the oil. Also nitrogen is an important tool for this. It is injected into reservoirs that lie deep under the surface of the earth in order to increase the pressure in these reservoirs, which drops as the extraction period continues. The gas expands, pushing the oil to the surface. Underground pressure in the oil reservoir is sufficient to force the oil to the surface, all that is necessary is to place a complex arrangement of valves (the Christmas tree ) on the well head to connect the well to pipeline network for storage and processing. Tertiary recovery- or enhanced oil recovery methods increase the mobility of the oil in order to increase extraction.Flow of Fluids Through Porous Media. Use of Imaging and displacement tests to maximize oil recovery by water flooding. Reservoir Development, Enhanced Oil Recovery, and Water Conformance technology used for minimizing the high water cut production..
