Human Rights Intern Team Leader
Lead a team of 5 human rights interns each working on individual projects. We also created an identity series dialogue together. The identity series dialogues were born out of a shared passion of the human rights team to strengthen the intercultural competency of students through the power of dialogue. The idea of the series is to get students to think and reflect about the world around them by getting them to first reflect inwardly about their own values and ideas and how they are connected to human rights. We covered topics ranging from race to differing ability, to interfaith and generational trauma as well as environmentalism, mental health and institutional racism. Our dialogues were held every three weeks in various locations across campus. We managed to get students to think about the issues of power and privilege in our society and community through activities such as a privilege exercise called beads, and identity tree activity and a reflection activity on our names and the stories behind them. Through this series we managed to connect more not only to our peers at the University YMCA but also with our peers across campus, partnering with a few organizations and bringing our dialogue to Coffman’s 2nd floor. It was an enriching experience and a great success for not only the grant but also the University YMCA.

The Computational Visual Neuroscience Laboratory (CVNLAB) is located in the Center for Magnetic Resonance Research (CMRR) in the Radiology Department at the University of Minnesota. The goal of the lab is to understand how the human brain represents visual images and makes perceptual decisions about these images. We use a combined experimental and computational approach that seeks to develop models that characterize the stimulus transformations perfomed by the brain. Our primary measurement technique is functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), which is ideally suited to identify these transformations, given its excellent spatial resolution and ability to monitor activity across the numerous areas of visual cortex. Recent increases in magnetic field strength (10.5T) are expected to provide substantial gains in spatial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio, enabling the acquisition of large, high-quality datasets that can be used to resolve functional differences across cortical layers and columns. In the spirit of reproducible research, we make freely available tools and resources (e.g. experiments, data, code) developed in the course of our research.Roles:Participating in weekly lab meetings in which we discuss current and future research with the head professor and Post-doctoral studentsReading, discussing and presenting articles on relevant research weekly.
