I became a 60 hour trained Volunteer Advocate for DASACC in November 2018. In my role, I am capable to respond to crises of domestic abuse and sexual assault at police stations and hospitals in Warren County, New Jersey. As a Volunteer Advocate, I have a short amount of time with a survivor to discuss with them their options and the other services DASACC provides. I actively listen to what the survivor says, so I may create a safety plan that is unique to them.

As a volunteer with this organization, I offer my help for many events that they organize or are affiliated with. I assist them with recruitment and community outreach as they are always searching for more volunteers. I help with fundraising as well as promoting events or raffles that they are having, i.e. Oktoberfest, Holiday Shoppe, Jeep car raffle. I participate in many tabling events where we tell the audience what this organization is, list our services, recruit more volunteers, promote any upcoming events, etc. Also, I volunteer at their Wardrobe of Hope, which is their free clothing boutique. Women that enter the boutique do not have to disclose who they are or what their situation may be. They enter a judgement-free boutique full of helping hands to put together an outfit that fits and makes them feel confident. As a volunteer, I help women find an outfit as well as accessories for a special event or a job interview.

I have been a Victim Advocate for the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office, Victim Witness Unit. In my role, I worked closely with victims of crime: domestic violence cases, first appearances, restitution cases, assault cases, domestic violence contempt cases, return of weapons cases, and crimes committed by juveniles. I communicated with these victims about the criminal justice process whether it be in criminal court or family court when the prosecutor's office is involved. I notified victims of all court appearances of the defendant as well as updated them on how the case was proceeding. I was responsible for relying information to the victim from the Prosecutor, such as plea recommendations. I was also responsible for referring victims to services for counseling and monetary compensation. In this role, I spoke to the victims of such crimes and discovered if there was any restitution to be requested for damages and/or medical expenses. I notified all victims that they may contact me with any questions they may have regarding their specific case and the criminal justice process.

I viewed supervised visitations with a trained visitation monitor and assisted them in any way I could with the parents and children. Also, I prepared correspondences to judges related to court ordered visitations between parents and children to assist the court in making determinations of the best interests of children involved in family law, domestic violence, and dependency proceedings.

I assisted an Assistant Criminal Division Manager by working with her employees to complete daily tasks. Some of my daily tasks were preparing arraignments to be delivered to judges to use in court trials, performing secretarial duties such as making copies and scanning indictments, preparing No Bill letters to be mailed to defendants, and updating the indictment jacket mailbox log. As an intern I was given the opportunity to use my developed research and writing skills to assist in writing a proposal for a Pre-Trial Intervention Program unit in Essex County.

I advocated, educated, and empowered an array of people about domestic violence through conversing with victims and the public on the topic, bringing awareness to it, and differentiating commonly mistaken myths from facts. I used my developed interpersonal communication skills to connect with victims and provide them with the necessary information and programs to file an injunction and remove themselves from an abusive situation.
