Operable's mission was to help teams collaborate better around their DevOps process, remember everything that happens, and use that data to continually improve. We used the lessons we've learned over decades of leading high growth, high performance engineering and operations organizations to build Cog, the first ChatOps platform designed for the enterprise. As is typical in early stage startups, I was involved across all parts of the business. My focus was on product strategy, community/partner/customer relationships, and business operations but I also contributed code across various Cog subsystems and the surrounding ecosystem.

Led the Technical Operations organization to support the growth of Digital Ocean's infrastructure cloud as we became the 3rd largest web hosting company in the world. Areas of responsibility included Site Reliability Engineering, Network Engineering, and Hardware Engineering.• Participated as part of the executive team in setting the overall DigitalOcean product strategy.• Defined and implemented processes around areas like incident management, site reliability engineering, and customer support escalation.• Led Technical Operations through the addition of the AMS3, LON1, NYC3 regions.• Acted as the primary spokesperson for DigitalOcean when communicating with customers regarding any outages.• Drove the definition, sourcing, procurement, and eventual rollout of a next generation hypervisor hardware architecture across Hardware Engineering, Finance, Datacenter Operations, and external vendors.

Primarily responsible for strategic issues around leadership and mentoring, engineering process, incident management, infrastructure planning and procurement, and technical architecture.Some of the areas and projects that I was directly involved in include:• Recruited, mentored, and provided ongoing leadership for the GitHub operations staff.• Led incident response, retrospective learning, and remediation efforts for large scale incidents.• Helped develop and document the operations engineering and incident management processes.• Led GitHub's infrastructure transition from a managed hosting environment to a mixed datacenter and cloud environment. Was heavily involved in all facets of the project including , technical specification, procurement, network and physical infrastructure design, technical implementation, and service migration.• Participated in architectural design and implementation across all areas of GitHub physical, network, and system management infrastructure. • Developed custom software and Puppet modules to automate the GitHub infrastructure.• Designed, configured, and managed the GitHub core and edge networks.

Responsible for Technical Operations for the second leading daily deals service, with hundreds of millions of dollars of annual deals sold. • Responsible for the technical infrastructure for all of LivingSocial's digital products. • Collaborated closely with the product management and engineering organizations to streamline the process of rolling out new products and applications.• Led the transition from a legacy managed hosting provider to a new datacenter environment.• Grew the organization from 3 to approximately 15 across Network Engineering, Operations Engineering, and Platform Engineering to support growth.• Managed vendor relationships around infrastructure procurement.

Responsible for cloud operations for the Heroku cloud application hosting platform through the acquisition by Salesforce overseeing growth from 60,000 to 1.5 million hosted applications.• Built an engineering organization responsible for core infrastructure tooling, automation, and site reliability engineering for the Heroku platform. • Provided architectural guidance across the engineering organization with regard to operability.• Participated in the development of various parts of the Heroku platform and automation tooling.• Managed Amazon Web Services relationship as one of the largest consumers.• Worked as part of the executive team to set direction, strategy, and manage roadmap for the business.• Participated in the financial planning and analysis process to control and optimize infrastructure cost structure.

First software engineer at Decisiv. Led the development of the first 3 versions of their heavy truck repair estimation and fleet management software products. Early versions were based on Java, eventually transitioning to Ruby on Rails in late 2005.
