We use advanced algorithms to link those data to create a longitudinal record that cannot exist within any single data source. As Associate Director of the Center for Biomedical Informatics I serve as the technical lead for our development and implementation group. I am the Managing Director of the Office of Biomedical Informatics at UTHSC. My group provides secure, HIPAA/HITECH compliant support for our faculty, staff and community partners in the fields of clinical informatics & databasing and health informatics. We make use of our own homegrown "Slim-Prim" integrated data system, as well as leveraging the resources of our academic partners, such as i2b2 and REDCap. Data are securely housed on-site in our Oracle servers and accessed via customizable web applications.In addition we offer data management consultation, project planning and IRB application support and biostatistics services.

Biomedical Informatics, Office Of Research

I am the Associate Director for Biomedical Informatics for UTHSC. I work with our faculty and their community partners to ensure their clinical databasing needs are met in a HIPAA and HITECH compliant manner. I work closely with the Office of Research Compliance and the Institutional Review Board (of which I am a member) to make sure our patient populations are properly protected in clinical trials.

I manage a diverse portfolio of clinical and basic science projects whose data are housed in our Slim-Prim integrated data system: a clinical trial management system. In addition I work with our Office of Academic Affairs, focusing on exploiting educational technologies for the UTSHC campus.

I used advanced biochemical and electrophysiological techniques to examine the molecular pharmacology of a class of synaptic proteins known known to underlie second messenger signalling at glutamatergic synapses in the CNS.In lay-terms, I studied the pharmacology of how specific proteins in the brain, at nerve endings, can help modulate the strength of signals between nerves. This is the mechanism that underlies our ability to form and retain memories.

I used advanced electrophysiological techniques to describe the molecular mechanisms underlying modulation of TRPV1 receptors.In lay-terms, TRPV1 receptors are responsible for our pain-sensing abilities. I analyzed how these receptors work in response to heat, acid and salt. I quite literally studied why it hurts to get salt (or lemon juice) in a cut!
