Lead Oncology Dietitian, Band 6/7 Acute Based.

Slough, England, United Kingdom

As a new post, my objectives were to lead the implementation, organisation and maintenance of the oncology dietetic service within the Trust, as well as develop my management skills by providing line-management for a graduate dietitian. This involved integration into several multi-disciplinary oncology teams working within the Trust, creating my own out-patient clinic and attending the consultant-led oncology out-patients clinics. I also established an oncology in-patient service, produced patient pathways, contributed to oncology operational plans, participated in peer review and compiled written information for patients. The clinical side of my role allowed me to improve my skills of persuasion as oncology patient groups, almost always needing some form of nutritional support, can be non-compliant with medical treatment and dietary advice.

Highly Specialised Dietitian For Nutritional Support

Chertsey, England, United Kingdom

This position gave me the opportunity to consolidate my knowledge in nutritional support. Having initiated and implemented the Home Enteral Feeding (HEF) service in my previous position in the Trust, I extended my role by learning to change balloon gastrostomies in the community, thus reducing A&E admissions. The type of HEF patients I reviewed and monitored, either at home, in a nursing home or a hospice was varied, including stroke patients, and patients with Motor Neurone Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease and learning disabilities. I also participated in the domiciliary service for patients requiring general dietetic input, such as oral nutritional support, weight reduction and for diabetes. In the hospital, I provided dietetic input, usually nutritional support, to the intensive care unit, surgical and medical high dependency wards. I also had the exciting challenge of initiating and developing the Parental Nutrition team in collaboration with pharmacists and doctors.I have prepared and delivered a great deal of training and presentations to other health care professionals, including dietitians and nurses (both acute and community), hospital based doctors, GP’s, speech and language therapists, as well as care homes, patients and carers. Dealing with such a wide range of people has allowed me to develop my verbal and written communication, motivational and negotiation skills. I developed good contacts and close working relationships with enteral feeding companies, pharmaceutical companies and other dietetic departments. I joined a local HEF dietetic group to aid information sharing.I was involved in and on some occasions was solely responsible for the formation of various policies and undertaking audits, including compiling the Parenteral Nutrition team policy and auditing it’s progress and success; the policy to enable me to change balloon gastrostomies, and auditing hospital use of the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool.
