I manage a team of four editors and senior editors specialising in health information. Together we develop content in formats including webpages, printed booklets, videos and social posts.We work closely with people with lived experience and subject matter experts, in Marie Curie and externally, to make our content clear and easy to use.

I spent my time:• researching and writing our core information online and in print, working with users and healthcare professionals to make sure it was meeting their needs• scoping and developing content for new audiences, including survivors of sexual violence and the LGBTQ+ community• overseeing all aspects of the Information department, including managing budgets, developing plans and contributing to our organisational strategy• managing our Support Services Officers• learning, learning and doing some more learning — as the resident information expert for the charity, I needed to be on top of all developments in the cervical world.

With the editor role came extra responsibilities — I flew solo as project manager for different health information resources in print, online and other accessible formats. In essence, that means I scoped the resource content, aims, and design, as well as overseeing the process from concept to delivery. A few of my favourite projects:• I project managed two new resources for people affected by cancer and dementia, as well as the people who care for them. It was a wholly different audience for us, which meant facilitating focus groups, collaborating with other expert charities and creating something that still felt 'Macmillan' but worked for the people who needed it. • I lead on the revision and creation of standardised text across our entire suite of information — challenging, given the sheer amount of it, but worth it to see us being consistent in our tone, content and terminology. • I recruited and managed a number of editorial interns (after practise managing over 300 home-based volunteer information reviewers), helping them develop skills and making sure their time at Macmillan was worthwhile.

After moving to Macmillan Cancer Support, I started telling anyone who would listen that "working in charity is what I'm meant to do". I was given opportunity after opportunity to develop foundation skills I'd need for the rest of my career, including:• coordinating the patient and professional review of our information• learning the ins and outs of the Information Standard (and how to stick to them!)• proofreading and editing online and printed content with the IS in mind• project management, practised on our audio and e-resources, from scripting to promotion• the importance of data protection policies.

At The Lancet, I was lucky enough to have my initial fixed-term contract extended and spend more time tailoring my writing, editing and research skills to health information. I offered administrative support to the editorial team, quickly learning the pros of a good CMS (a bespoke system in this case), as well as compiling and producing a report about submissions.
