About Imran Bashir

20+ years of experience in semiconductor industry spanning various markets including cellular, connectivity, IoT, image sensing, and quantum computing. Worked in multiple engineering roles from individual contributor to IC design team lead. Expertise in analog / RF / mixed signal / cryogenic IC design, DSP, system architecture, quantum device characterization, noise and impairment modeling.In my current role as IC design lead at Equal1 Labs, I am responsible for the architecture and IC design of cryogenic electronics for the quantum controller IC. The controller is monolithically integrated with the quantum structure designed using a 22nm FD-SOI CMOS process without any application specific tailoring of the layers and materials. In addition to design activities, I supervised a team of 6 IC designers toward a recent tape out. Also, I am playing a pivotal role in quantum device characterization using rackmount equipment.In addition to my day job, I am constantly `upgrading’ myself and learning about new technologies such as quantum computing by taking semester courses at local educational institutions and attending workshops at conferences. I have also presented several papers related to the work at Equal1 Labs at the IEEE European Solid-State Circuits Conference (ESSCIRC), Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits Conference (RFIC), IEEE Quantum Week, and American Physical Society (APS).

Silicon based quantum device characterization.Equal1 Labs is a quantum computing startup with a vision to build a miniaturized and low-cost quantum computer that can deliver exponential computing power. At the heart of our apparatus is a Quantum Processor Unit (QPU) in which the cryogenic electronics for qubit manipulation and read out is monolithically integrated with a garden variety of silicon-based quantum structures with qubit counts between 6 and 424. The QPU, designed in commercial CMOS process, is cooled to a temperature of 3.5K using a two-stage Gifford McMahon cryocooler; much simpler cryocooler compared to a dilution fridge. Efforts are underway to characterize and enhance qubit fidelity to enable this technology for a diverse range of applications including vaccine discovery, climate modelling, financial services and artificial intelligence.
