Before reading, please take three deep breaths. Wow, didn’t that feel amazing?In today’s society, everyone is constantly on the go, and we all seem to juggle an overwhelming number of obligations and commitments. Given the frenetic pace of life, it is almost unheard of us to pause, take a step back, and reflect on our mental and physical well-being. My passion for mental and physical well-being is why I decided to attend Queen’s University to undertake, a sociology degree with a majority classes in the health disciple. One of my favourite courses was the Social Determinants of Health. This course provided me with knowledge of the social, political, economic and cultural conditions which influence our physical and mental circumstances. Currently, I am a coordinator at SickKids Foundation. I love my job. I have the privilege of speaking to different organizations and individuals about the fantastic work SickKids does on behalf of their patients and their families. I also have the opportunity to speak about my personal experience at SickKids which has enhanced my confidence and enables me to be part of the ongoing efforts to destigmatize mental illness and normalize discussion of mental health. In addition to my position at SickKids, I pursued a post-graduate Wellness Coaching certificate at Humber College. This wellness program provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary for promoting health and wellness and preventing or managing diseases. I am certified in Mental Health First Aid, a registered Health Coach under the Canadian Health Coach Alliance, and will be pursuing further certification at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition to become a holistic nutritionist.
