About Indigo Willing

Indigo is a war orphan, skateboarder and has a PhD in Sociology. Being unstoppably dedicated to removing social barriers shapes her life’s work and pathways. Indigo works in both Sydney and Brisbane. Awards:- 1st Place, QLD Government Individual Achievement Award, Outdoors QLD, 2024 - 1st Place, Consent is Rad, Social Project of the Year, Skate Like a Girl 2023.- In the top 5 nominees for Inspirational Person of the Year, Skate Like a Girl 2023. - Asian Australian Alliance Top124 List, Achievement in Sport Research (2022 and 2023/4).- 2nd Place, Consent is Rad, Social Project, Exposure Skate Rising Awards, USA. 2021.- Medal in the Order of Australia (OAM*) for Adopted Vietnamese International (AVI). 2006Awarded Fellowships:-NSW Churchill Fellow. Project - Adopted Vietnamese in the Diaspora. Memberships:- Co-chair, Skateistan Int. Advisory Board - Skateistan co-build skating and education programs for children and others particularly from war and conflict zones, in partnership with local skate groups from around the globe. Skateistan are also featured in a documentary that won an Academy Award in 2021 - Editorial Board for the Asian Australian Studie Series for Australian National University Press - Co-convener for the Sport and Leisure Group for The Australian Sociological Association.Leadership and Advocacy:Co-founder -Consent is Rad / Respect is Rad -We Skate QLD - Skating, Sustainability, Health Research and Environmental Design (SSHRED) network Founder -Adopted Vietnamese International (AVI) network -Asian Australian Review (formerly Asian Films, Forum, and News Network) *OAM returned in 2021 as a stance of support for Dr Clara Tuck Meng Soo (protesting the AC to Margaret Court). Subcultures, Sport and Social Inclusion – focusing on sociology of youth, subcultures, action and lifestyle sports, with a special interest in skateboarding. This includes the participation of minority, marginalized and ‘non-traditional’ populations in various scenes. Studies also explore social change-making in the areas of gender equity, sustainability, and social inclusion.2. Migration and Multiculturalism – including research on transnationalism, diversity and cosmopolitanism, transnational adoption and sociological frameworks for the study of Asian and Vietnamese diasporas3. The Vietnam War – including war orphans, Vietnamese adoption, and how films and other forms of mediated memories connected with the conflict have an impact on people’s attitudes and emotional responses towards conflicts in contemporary times.

Our main mission is to promote and encourage the participation and advancement of diversity in skateboarding. Our activities include coaching workshops, competitions, film screenings, skate demonstrations, educational talks and more. Recent grants to run community projects include the 'Adoptees Rolling' program for youth adopted from Asia, African and elsewhere abroad to Australia from Relationships Australia (2022) and for an anti-racism art, photography and skating project 'We All Skate QLD' from the Goodpush Alliance (2022).*The group was previously known as Girls Skate Brisbane 2016 - April 2020. We changed our name to recognise the greater diversity within our participants, staff and broader skate community.

Adopted Vietnamese International (AVI) is an award-winning initiative and one of the largest and longest-running Vietnamese adoptee-focused networks in the world. AVI was launched in April 2000 on the 25th anniversary of end the Viet Nam War and dedicated to Vietnamese adoptees from past generations to today. My work with AVI was acknowledged with a Medal in the Order of Australia (OAM)* in October 2006 for service to the community. In the lead-up to 2025 for the 50th anniversary of the end of the war our key focus is on offering resources, crowd-sourced adoptee-led information, and international opportunities for Vietnamese adoptees to connect with each other via social media platforms (a private FB Community Group with over 1000+ members).*Note I returned my OAM as a stance of support for LGBTIAQ+ communities and First Nations Peoples in 2021.
