Inemesit was born in Nigeria, the second daughter of Arit and Utip Essien, and is of Ibibio ancestry. Her father was a gynecologist and her mother worked first as a high school English teacher and then a mental health social worker until her retirement. Inemesit immigrated with her family to England when she was 5 and graduated from university in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Politics and International Relations. She moved to Denendeh, the traditional land of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation, in 2008 to begin her career. Inemesit worked for the City of Yellowknife for several years before joining the GNWT HSS in the Population Health Division. She held the position of Research Assistant for 7 years before leaving to pursue a career in fitness training with a focus on perinatal health. This journey revealed to her the many ways health information was biased and created for the benefit of a white male population while causing harm to non-males, particularly women and femmes of the global majority. After 2020 Inemesit began to advocate more publicly for health equity through dismantling harmful ideologies created through systems of oppression.Inemesit is a mother to 3 sons, ages 6, 11 and 13. In her spare time, she enjoys the creative arts and finds expression through illustration, painting, writing and spoken word poetry. Inemesit is in the work of radical change, which in the words of Angela Davis, simply means pulling at the roots. By pulling at the roots of systems of oppression, we can imagine a future where we are all free to be.
