Born in the city of Porto, Portugal on 13 May 1990, Inês Aguiar Branco attended 'Universidade Católica Portuguesa', graduating in 2011 with an undergraduate degree in Law followed by an LLM in Public International Law in 2012 from Queen Mary University, London.Subsequently, while serving as an Intern at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for a period of two months, she completed her Master's thesis on International Organization's Effectiveness.Further to the abovementioned, Inês has also completed an Internship with the European External Action Service (EEAS) in Brussels, in addition to working at the University of Porto where she was involved in the creation of the Centre "OCEANUS, Marine Research & Innovation".In 2014, she was proud to represent Portugal as its first participant at the International Foundation for the Law of the Sea (IFLOS) Summer Academy.Afterwards, she worked for the Portuguese Secretary of State for the Sea in Lisbon and later on she was an Intern with the Division for Ocean Affairs and Law of the Sea at the United Nations. After concluding her internship at DOALOS, she returned to Portugal to work as a Technical Expert for the Portuguese Government at the Ministry for the Sea.In 2016, Inês was nominated by her office for the Nippon Fellowship Programme at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, in Hamburg, where she completed her research fellowship on the topic of conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction (BBNJ).From 2019 to 2020, Inês held the position of Ocean Policy Analyst with the Sustainable Ocean Initiative, part of World Resources Institute. Inês was part of the Secretariat of the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy where she was responsible for monitoring and analysing trends and developments, identifying new scientific research and relevant policy developments, while closely following the political, governance and regulatory progress in priority countries and regions. She was also responsible for engaging with ocean initiatives and assist in finding strategic synergies to galvanise widespread collaboration for the achievement of the High Level Panel’s overarching aim.Inês returned to Portugal to serve as Technical Expert in the Portuguese Government in matters of fisheries.Currently, Inês holds the position of Technical Expert in the Ministry for Economy and Sea.
