I have extensive experience within administration and finance, starting off in Shetland working for a prominent shipping company, there was no such thing as a job description back then, if it needed doing and you could do it….. This I believe set the tone for my working career, seeing the bigger picture and the value of working as a team to achieve the best outcome for everyone. Jumping forward to my arrival in Australia (Karratha in January), with my husband and daughter, life could not have been more different, no job, no friends and a whole new way of life. I started off as a volunteer for the local Theatre as an usher, this progressed into bar manager, a member of the committee, a paid member of the administration team, front of house and relief duty manager. At the same time, I joined the committee for the Youth Theatre, they needed someone to run the drama classes, so I stuck my hand up, I have no experience, but I have a can-do attitude and google. I was surprisingly good at it and stepped into project officer for the organisation and later choir coach (I can not sing). Having a bit of spare time, I also became an orientation coordinator for the local oil company, introducing new families to the area and assisting them to settle into their new lives, many of which came from overseas to the same scenario as I had. Moving to Perth, I found a wonderful administration / finance job at a farm school, run by the Department of Education, who supported those with life challenges, both physically and mentally, one of the most rewarding roles, with the most wonderful team / family you could ask for. All these amazing experiences made me realise I had a passion for helping others and the Human Resource side of business operations, employee relations, training, safety, well-being and problem solving. I decided to study HR and have obtained my cert iv to gain additional knowledge and understanding. With 20+ years of some amazing opportunities and experiences I have a wealth of transferable skills, I intend to keep learning and growing as new opportunities present.
