About Sarah Gillett
I have 25 years experience working in the UK arts sector as a curator, arts educator and digital innovator. As Director Innovation and Strategy for Cultureshock I listen, give insight and strategic recommendations to develop unique propositions with museums, cultural organisations and commercial brands. My aim is to help clients tell compelling stories that connect people with each other and the world around them. My current clients include the V&A, British Council Arts, Philips Auction House, White Cube, The Olympic Museum, Tate, University of Lincoln, University of Westminster, The National Archives, UBS and Gaggenau. In my research-based artistic practice I use drawing, pixels, objects and text to investigate the life of things across space and time, art and science. I reposition material from historical and contemporary sources to collage together uncanny encounters that play with the origins of words, the scale of objects and our relationship to the world around us.In 2012 I won the Pushing Print Solo Award for 'Earthquake', a large-scale collage work produced as a result of winning the Tim Mara RCA residency. In 2014 I undertook a geological research programme in Ontario, working with astronomers, astrophysicists, palaeontologists, fossil hounders and material scientists resulting in a body of work focused on meteorites and their falls. My set of essays 'Sea shells, silk sails and the parabolic etching of the night sky' was shortlisted for the Intellect Publishing Prize. In 2016 I mounted 'Quarry', a solo exhibition of collage, print, painting and embroidered works at the Brocket Gallery inspired by Paolo Uccello’s 1470 painting 'The Hunt in the Forest'. In 2017 I was an artist with the 'Laboratory of Dark Matters', supported by Arts Council England, making new work in response to particle astrophysicists hunting for dark matter. After completing the Lumen artist residency in Italy in 2018 I undertook a residency exploring mysterious cases in the universe with Tim Corne at O House Studios, Sydney, Australia, following which my work was presented at Sydney Contemporary 2019. In 2020-2021 I developed a new body of work for Fermynwoods Contemporary Art that dug into night landscapes and the different ways that we traverse darkness physically and emotionally, from archeology and astronomy to mythology, spiritualism and depression. In 2023 I am working with the Head of Entomology at the Übersee-Museum in Bremen, Germany on a 'story show' commission opening up new conversations between digital audiences and the collection.

Director Digital
It's very exciting to be working for a company that is looking at new ways to get great digital content to audiences internationally. I believe that the contextualisation of the arts within a wider societal and political framework is fundamental to audience's understanding and engagement.
