The quote that resonates with and inspires me most is John F. Kennedy’s “We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.” [Address at Rice University, September 12, 1962] I bill myself as an innovative marketer, but that is because I enjoy a challenge. If you have a challenge, I want to try it. If it hasn’t been done before, I want to figure it out. For example, once in an interview for a generic pharmaceuticals job I was told that I wouldn’t be hired because I was a “brand marketer”, and that hiring brand marketers never works out. Brand marketers, I was informed, could never make the switch to generics; the worlds were entirely too different. After hearing this rejection, what did I do? I looked elsewhere, got hired as the company’s first generics marketer, quickly learned the market, and became the premier, most innovative generics marketer in the country, developing consumer awareness and multichannel promotion that drove patients to ask for our company’s generics by name. Yes, it was hard, but that is why I chose to do it. Failure, as they say, is not an option.
