The Faculty of Law/ Department of Law, University of Calcutta is in its present position since 1983. The Department offers B.A. LL.B (5 yrs) (Hons.), LL.M (2 yrs) and LL.D/PhD as academic degrees. Since the inception of the Department of Law, the University of Calcutta, the institute has been a witness to students with exceptional mettle in respect of academic performances. The Department of Law, University of Calcutta has three functional student academic committees, namely, Moot Court Committee, Journal & Seminar Committee, and Debate Committee, established under the Student Committee Rules, 2017. The enrollment of students from far-off places such as the North-Eastern states has increased post the establishment of the committees. Department of Law, University of Calcutta also achieved recognition in the national debating circuit through our flagship initiative Rajendra Prasad Memorial Debate (RPMD) which has been witnessing splendid success since 2017, the year of its inception. It has released its flagship podcast named (il)legality in April, 2020, and has a functional blog - Legis Sententia, established in 2019. It also conducts a yearly intra moot court competition and regularly organises various academic and co-curricular events throughout the calendar. On July 1st, 2021, few enthusiastic students came together to form an Ad-hoc Placement Committee which temporarily functioned for 8 months to create a base for formalising the setting up of a permanent cell. On March 15th, 2022, a Constitution was adopted officially establishing the Integrated Internship & Placement Cell (IIPC) to facilitate employment, traineeship and internship opportunities to the students of the Department. It is now functional as a Student-cum-Faculty run body which aims to act as an interface between the industry demands and talent supply of the Department.
