Profile bio

About Michael J. Babcock, Jr.

Back to my main thing, interrobang. Founded in 1992 to do typographic design printed by traditional letterpress methods, using metal type and ornament. I've amassed tons of rare typographic material, great equipment to set and print it on, and have over 30 years expertise. I design books, inside and out, and manage their production.I'm looking for interesting projects, both analog and digital. Print collateral, packaging, book interiors, cases, covers, and jackets, and bookish ephemera. Digital design, layout, production, and project management. I rescue troubled books. You can bounce a quarter off my files. (They're tight.)--Interned / summer employed at Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulous in the bullpen summers '83 - '85 under Reno Litterio and the legendary Bob Stacy.Freelanced, and worked at a number of small boutique ad agencies in the late 80s and one of the larger into the early 90s. Ran studios, did art direction, managed freelancers. Won a couple awards. Made the jump from glue pots and rapidographs to Macs and mice, and helped transition at least one agency through tectonic shifts, and hardware handshakes. Saw the writing on the wall and learned to write some code. Made a few web sites. Worked in multi-media marketing as factotum for 11 years. Left that and took interrobang full-time 2010–17. Did a lot of good work. Starved.I took the Production and Design Manager position at Godine late in 2017 - making books that matter for people who care. Ate better. That ended in early 2020 with new management and ownership as the pandemic hit.Since 2006 I've been typographer, operator/machinist, running perhaps the only hot metal typesetting business on the web at Linotypesetting.com.I teach letterpress spring semesters in the design department at Lesley University.I've sat pro bono on the executive council of the Society of Printers, Boston, serving as Treasurer since 2007.

Listed skills include Typography, Graphics, Graphic Design, Posters, and 17 others.
