We'd like to draw your attention to an important project Chris Scott, Ph.D. and her research team at Chestnut Health Systems is conducting for the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) that will likely benefit your jail, and jails across the country. Her team has been tasked with gathering information about the impact of the opioid epidemic on jails in counties hardest hit by the opioid crisis, and your county falls into this category. Chestnut has worked closely with and received input and guidance on this project from representatives of the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA), National Institute of Corrections (NIC), National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC), Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), and the American Jail Association (AJA). The goal of the interview is to gather information related to:(1) what procedures jails are currently implementing in response to the crisis; (2) what, if anything, they might like to do but are not currently able to do; (3) what resources or other assistance jails would need to strengthen their impact in addressing the opioid epidemic.This information will illustrate the magnitude of the problem you, your jail, and your community face daily, and will inform our federal partners about the resources needed to address this crisis. Please consider this as a great opportunity for your voice to be heard and to encourage teamwork and collaboration among the criminal justice system to fight this urgent public health crisis. Your participation is vital to understanding the impact of the opioid epidemic on the criminal justice system; the success of this initiative depends upon obtaining participation from those jails that have been identified by the survey team.
