Working as part of a team of 3 developers and 2 testers, we were responsible for the maintenance and on-going development on the UI side of an internal admin system. All interaction inside the admin system takes place through a REST service, maintained and developed by another internal team. This role requires a lot of integration with a diverse range of colleagues across the business and managing priorities accordingly.

My primary role within Lockheed Martin is to provide support and development to Skills Development Scotland on their flagship product My World of Work, a Drupal 6 website originally built in 2011 with new features and functionality added at various stages since launch. My World of Work has over 500,000 registered users attracting approx. 1.5m page views per month. The inevitable outcome of this ongoing development has caused a fragmentation of development and best practices resulting in inefficiency and bottlenecks, part of the ongoing support has been to identify and resolve some of these issues.A major piece of work involved upgrading the underlying code to be compatible with PHP 5.5. There are two open issues with Drupal 6 core which required patching and additionally several contributed modules also needed patching. However, the majority of the work involved going through the numerous custom modules and theme to fix the incompatibilities. The work was completed ahead of schedule and 30% under budget.

Working as part of a team within the largest Drupal agency in Scotland, I was working on several projects for Royal Mail primarily combining multiple existing mini-sites into the larger My Royal Mail website.I also assisted with phase 2 of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games website, this project has been split into multiple phases to cater for the various stages of the run up to the games. Phase 2 went live at the end of 2012 with a lot of additional functionality.

Working on my own within a small team of Drupal developers’ I was contracted for 10 weeks to carry out the transition work of an existing UK based administration website into Spanish for 3 South American markets. The work involved a full Spanish translation of the Drupal interface, adjustment of location specific details and various amendments throughout the site. This project was completed ahead of schedule, as a result of my work on this project I have been put onto a rolling 1 month contract assisting in various projects.I also completed a Drupal 7 project to allow training providers to apply for a certain type of course accreditation. This project involves a lot of contributed modules including Views, Organic Groups, Rules, Panels and Features plus quite a lot of custom modules. There have been numerous occasions where the contributed module has not worked to expectation, it has been necessary to fix the issue and supply this fix back to the Drupal community.

Working as part of a small team of designers and developers I am responsible for creating content managed systems for a number of differing clients. G-Forces specifically target smaller companies offering a fully hosted and content management system. I have been involved in approx. 50 different projects ranging from sports clubs to automotive dealers and insurance companies to computer hardware specialists.G-Forces specialise in using open-source technologies for the development of their sites, the main infrastructure involves using an Apache web server running on Linux (running Chili ASP), mySQL and a range of other open-source products which involved a certain amount of transition when I first started.All of the websites I have created for G-Forces must meet strict conformance guidelines such as W3C XHTML and must also be created using floating layers rather than tables which has greatly improved my all round coding skills.

Working as part of a small team I am responsible for the continuing development of the entire group of Blockbuster websites. A large proportion of sites involve eCommerce to allow customers to buy and rent products. In addition to the front end sites, there are also a number of backend sites which allow administrators to monitor sales, modify content, schedule database replication, monitor site usage, etc. The sites are under continual development with changes taking place every week including a weekly e-mail newsletter. The sites require continual monitoring to minimise outages and part of the job requires 24-hour call out if necessary.I have also been involved in small projects creating specialised Intranets for Great Ormond Street Hospital to monitor cancelled operations and Expotel (a corporate hotel booking company) to report on hotel bookings. These small projects have involved working closely with the designer and project manager to create effective and user-friendly sites.

Working as part of a team of designers and developers I helped to create web sites and Intranets for the clients of this design agency. Sites range from static HTML to fully dynamic ASP database driven sites. The majority of my work was the successful creation of a fully dynamic ASP Intranet for an insurance company utilising the folder and file structure of the web server to create the site dynamically. Originally this project only required a small static Intranet, but through a close working relationship with the client this evolved into a very complex system linked to their in-house HR system. This Intranet also utilises several database applications and the content can be updated easily without requiring any technical knowledge..

I provided development support and guidance to e-commerce merchants when they joined the earthport e-commerce payment system. Many e-commerce merchants do not have a dedicated developer within their company and rely on third party developers, which can be expensive. As an incentive to join, earthport offer to undertake the development for them. This job also required direct communication with the e-commerce merchant to make sure the implementation worked successfully.
