Russ's career has focused on resolving patent and trade-secret disputes and related licensing transactions. He presently is Chief Counsel, Litigation at Intellectual Ventures, managing the assertion and defense of IV's patents in adversarial proceedings around the globe. He also reviews intellectual property across IV's vast portfolio to develop a holistic international strategy for managing patents throughout their life-cycle: strategic prosecution, licensing, litigation, appeals, and settlement.In private practice, Russ litigated intellectual property disputes on behalf of multinational corporate and commercial clients across the technology spectrum, from pre-suit investigation through trial and appeal to the U.S. Federal Circuit as well as in litigation before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Counseling clients on both offensive and defensive patent litigation strategies, Russ enjoys immersing himself in the underlying technologies and relevant industry standards to provide the best counsel possible to his clients. Russ also worked on strategic prosecution to ensure his clients were in the best position to license or leverage their patents before enforcement campaigns, as well as conducted portfolio assessments and large-scale freedom-to-operate analysis.With an educational background in chemistry and mathematics and a passion for all things involving computers, Russ has represented clients in industries from hedge funds and medical devices to pharmaceuticals and heavy equipment. The latter years of his private practice career focused on Hatch Waxman litigation on behalf of generic pharmaceutical companies and offensive infringement matters for nutraceutical manufacturers. This breadth of experience on both sides gives Russ a rare, balanced perspective on patent law issues.Russ has engaged in significant pro bono work through the Federal Public Defender's CJA panel and through the Children's Law Center where he represented children in need of protection in the foster care system. During Russ's years in the Seattle area, he has worked with the Seattle Clemency Project representing incarcerated individuals before the Clemency Board.Russ is admitted to practice in Minnesota and Washington as well as before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
