About Jake Ireland
Jake began his career working at the Nuffield Orthopaedic hospital at Oxford University in the UK between 2011-2012 where he assisted with theatre operations, processing of pathological samples, and the management of a biological specimen’s research bank. He followed this employment by completing his Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Genetics from Swansea University in 2015. He then proceeded to a Master of Research degree in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine at the University of Manchester in 2015-2016. During his master’s degree, he joined the lab of Dr Holly Shiels where he began research on a novel 3D cardiac model for the enhanced screening of pharmacological agents on the electrical activity of the heart (published work). He then worked for over a year at a company called Oxford Biomedica as an upstream process research and development scientist (2016-2017). This employment provided him with the opportunity to diversify his experience with the industry sector of the medical field and aid in the development of the world’s first commercially available gene therapy (CTL019, Novartis). He then travelled to Sydney Australia to do his PhD at the University of New South Wales (2018-present). His research topic is "Cardio-Mimetic Tissue Constructs that Mirrors the Conductive Anisotropy of the Human Heart" and he is investigating the use of stem cells as a cell therapy model to treat patients that have suffered heart attacks. Jake has presented his work in cardiovascular research at many internationally recognised conferences including the Physiology Symposium in 2016, the NIH PCTC Cardiovascular Bioengineering Symposium in 2019, and he is registered to present his work at the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS) conference in November this year (2021). Jake has co-authored several papers in his field and with collaborators in related fields and currently has three manuscripts being drafted for submission. He has received the Research Student Award from the Academic Research Postgraduate Council in Australia in recognition of his efforts in developing and managing the laboratory of Dr Kris Kilian at the University of New South Wales (2018). His research interests include the development of preconditioned cardiac progenitor stem cells and the design and development of dynamic extracellular matrix models and dynamic hydrogels for cardiac tissue engineering and fundamental studies in cell maturation.
Listed skills include Cell Culture, Microbiology, Pcr, Centrifugation, and 19 others.
