A conservation research graduate, I spent a few years abroad as a student and an early-career conservationist. I joined the Society for the Protection of Prespa in 2003, to work as a field biologist focusing on bird and fish research at the transboundary level. Since then, I have co-ordinated numerous projects spanning several fields of the organization's work, with a particular focus on research and monitoring, wetland management and habitat restoration, as well as local community engagement at the national and transboundary level. I have coordinated two EU-funded LIFE projects, within the area and participated in two more. Within this long-term employment, I have also worked in collaboration with the organization's Policy Department, assessing the impact of threats to ecosystems and species of conservation value of Prespa and supporting transboundary collaboration through the projects of a regional transboundary network (PrespaNet) of environmental NGOs.

The project aimed to inform and raise awareness among local people and fishermen, both professional and recreational, of these unique fish species and the threats they face, and to encourage the active participation of stakeholders and local authorities in fish protection activities. The information campaign focussed on the importance of sustainable fishery practices across the Prespa basin and of regulations to maintain the lakes’ native fish populations. Increased awareness aimed to facilitate the development of a fisheries management plan by regional authorities, which in turn would help biodiversity conservation and improve fishery practices and regulations at a national and transboundary level.
