As COVID ravaged already-declining local news coverage, I introduced The Essex Retorter into the journalistic void. While our name takes off on the town's former paper of record, we are dead serious about offering timely, accurate news from writers who have the knowledge, experience, perspective and integrity to provide a better read to our residents. Reader donations keep us in print.We regularly post articles to our website and print monthly editions covering the issues that other media miss, mess up, or merely bypass. In short, we report "the rest of the news in the 05452".I've turned operations over to an interim publisher while I serve in the Vermont Senate. They are posting updates to Facebook but not the website and have put print editions on hold.

Regularly attend and contribute within local government meetings, workshops, and site visits re policy-making, land use planning, affordable housing, economic development, energy, transportation, and budgeting, mostly within Essex, but also in nearby towns. Study local history to learn from it and encourage others to avoid repeating past missteps.Understand the complexity and nuances of current challenges. Pose well-informed, and sometimes difficult, questions that need to be asked. Conduct background research that has uncovered unexpected connections between people and positions.Ensure that the under-represented members of the public have a voice through mine.Create communications that convey complex issues using easy-to-comprehend words and graphics. Served on Essex Energy Committee (15 years), Board of Civil Authority (12 years), Regional Planning Commission (4 years Rep, 8 years Alternate Rep), Merger Task Force (2 years), ECOS Steering Committee, and numerous other ad hoc committees, in addition to 12 years as an elected official.

Thrice re-elected to a non-partisan, five-member town council which served 22,000 residents by making policy that upheld the health, safety and welfare of all. Served as Selectboard Chair from 2009-10. Penned Selectboard Shorts column for the Essex Reporter (local paper) to communicate news from The Inside. Campaigned for Better Communication and conceived that column as one way to keep citizens better-informed. (Front Porch Forum, a local online network, has been another boon.) Thousands of constituents rely on my quarterly e-mail updates to inform them of upcoming elections and other opportunities for community engagement. And they've come to expect me knocking on their doors on some of winter's coldest days!Want to know The Rest of the Story? That doesn’t always make me popular. It does make me tenacious and true to this vocation. I'm a full-time local gov’t volunteer serving on several local and regional committees. And I never missed a Selectboard meeting during my 12 years in office.
