The work entitled “2-(2’-pyridyl)-4,6-diphenylphosphinine: synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of novel transition metal complexes based on aromatic phosphorus heterocycles” was performed in the group of prof.dr. Christian Müller, in Eindhoven and at the FU Berlin (Germany), and prof.dr. Dieter Vogt. The coordination behavior of the pyridyl functionalized phosphinine ligand has been studied for a range of transition metals. Valuable structural information was gained that provides fundamental insight into this class of P,N hybrid ligands containing an aromatic phosphorus heterocycle. Also the properties of the coordination compounds, for future applications in functional molecular materials, and their reactivity towards nucleophilic attack were studied in detail making use of NMR, FT-IR, UV-Vis, and cyclic voltammetry all under Schlenk and dry box conditions. Whenever possible the analogous bipyridine systems were obtained for a detailed comparison of the structural and spectroscopic data.
