I worked on the optimization of the calculation of the estimated time of arrival of a driver before the rider makes a request. This is called eyeball ETA which is reflected on the uber app home screen.I aim to greatly reduce the computational cost of this ETA calculation while maintaining the same level of accuracy as the current method. I implemented the reading and writing of most relevant matches into/from the cache using Redis and predicted the current eyeball ETA using data from past matches to do KNN prediction.My project could save around 2800 CPU cores each year, adding up to $2-3 million annually.

Luxin is a start-up that integrates Lucene into Spark to fasten the analytical process on HDFS.During my internship here, I designed a multi-person chatroom using Netty and implemented a Kafka producer independently. I also used Lucene to create index and index query; implemented a customized analyzer that separates words using special char ‘|’. I also integrated that analyzer into Spark to speed up the searching process.

Together with three other groupmates, we made an IOS app “ODam” within 3 days of competition. The aim was to reduce food waste: users can take a photo of the food they buy before putting it into the fridge. The app will automatically tell the food name and expected expiration date and it will send a notification when food expires and delete that item from the main page.I came out with the idea of this app and designed the content of the app. The frontend of the app is made using Swift. Image recognition function is done by Google Vision API. Data for the food items are stored in Firebase, including the date when food is bought, food item name and days left till expiration.This project was later awarded honorable mention by Google, which is only for the top 10 teams.

I designed an RDM file reader independently, which is later used for reading cable report that is generated by a roadm device.I used MFC in Visual C++ to implement the file reader. Functions of the reader include selecting and opening a file, convert binary information in the file to show information such as file version, creating time, device number on a dialog.

Designed a website called “BelpDining” during the UCLA annual hackathon, which aims to provide a platform to share reviews of each dish on the UCLA dining hall menus.Used EJS, CSS and NodeJS to complete the front-end design of the main page, menu page as well as the review page.Used MongoDB for storing data on the backend and web scraping to get the most updated menu from our school dining hall website.

Designed a website for UCLA CSSA which serves as a platform for students to trade textbook, upload past exams and share information.Used React, NodeJS and CSS to implement the homepage. The homepage has a filter bar that directs users to different functions. Under each function, the content is Pinterest-styled, e.g each box includes the information of one used textbook and the contact info of its owner.
