About Iris Lim

“I want to work in a hospital.” – Iris Lim, 14Walking into a hospital gives me energy and hope. I enjoy being a medical technologist as my work enables me to help with the clinical diagnosis of patients. Having been exposed to the different sections in Laboratory Medicine during my Polytechnic attachment made me decide that I enjoy many aspects of Pathology, as well as Microbiology. Working in Microbiology Laboratory for the past decade has taught me that being a medical technologist does not just involve clinical diagnostic testing. It is also about the safety of our staff, the quality of our work, as well as the management of our manpower and resources. I am fortunate to have met many good and caring seniors, whom I can look up to in times of need and learn from them how to stay calm to plan effectively and work efficiently during peacetime and outbreaks. I have also been given many opportunities along the way to work with different people for different types of projects and learning the importance of teamwork and camaraderie. I was involved in many projects, which includes milestone initiatives such as setting up of Satellite Lab at Emergency Department and training of staff, managing Infectious Disease Outbreak Lab, leading SAP-Material Management migration in Microbiology, testing and implementing workflows for Microbiology Laboratory Automation, as well as ad-hoc events like Laboratory Day and Annual Departmental Dinners. I am currently managing around 60 staff in day-to-day operations and look after their training, welfare and well-being, which are fundamental to improve performance.
