As an indigena/Chicanx in higher education, to claim my indigenous roots, linked to the serpent goddess associated with Coatlicue and Tonantzin, is to engage an extremely subversive stance. It is risky identity politics. It is a stance that rejects Westernized, Eurocentric terms altogether, such as Latina, Mexicana, Mexican American, Mexican (unless I pronounce it Meshica), Hispanic, or Chicana. Let one not forget, however, that the trope of Chicanidad embodies the indigena’s indigenous consciousness, which seeks to revisit and revitalize the knowledges or (iximachocayotl, which is pronounced esheemachocayotl and signifies “consciousness” in Nahuatl) and cultural practices of Pre Columbian indigenous peoples in MesoAmerica. Peoples such as the Aztecs of Tenochititlan--now Mexico City—annihilated by want of land, riches and power, however, left behind priceless, even metaphysical, remnants for those of us here in the U.S. who seek decoloniality of the mind, decolonial agency, and a decolonial consciousnessI take initiative as an educator to empower diverse student bodies by teaching them a variety of critical literacy skills, both analog and digital. While many of these skills have historically had a gatekeeping function, my role in educating diverse student bodies encourages me to draw upon inclusive pedagogical literacy frameworks that derive from Ethnic Studies traditions. Ethnic Studies offers a variety of rich and effective inclusive teaching methods that aim to develop a more informed, conscious, and literate society that can collectively contribute to sustainable and empowered communities.I do this because though there are certain objective outcomes that need to be met to proceed to successful completion of a college degree, I believe that students should engage with critical societal and historical topics to be more informed about their current multifaceted positionality and future contributions to their communities and proposed professions to the world.I am a lifelong learner of Literature, Philosophy, Rhetoric, Sociology, Ethnic Studies, History and a host of other academic and non-academic subjects. I love to learn, as my headline suggests. I am extremely inquisitive, self-determined and ambitious. I set goals that require little to huge amounts of time to accomplish, and I am pretty good about achieving them. I am open to new and exciting research ideas. I have competency in many areas and am constantly learning new skills as they present themselves in the 21st century.
