Within the Lin Lab, I conduct a combination of dry lab and wet lab research. I work with two PhD students to stretch MDCK cells on jigs and study the strain on individual cells. After capturing images of cells, I crop images of 100 individual cells from the before and after stretch images, use MATLAB to calculate the nuclear deformation and nuclear strain, and manually calculate the cytoplasmic and nuclear strain for individual cells. My wet lab roles include immunostaining, cell culture, and PDMS fabrication. I also utilize OriginPro to plot nuclear strain and cytoplasmic strain and present my findings.

As a resource committee member for the Students for Community Outreach, Promotion, and Education (SCOPE) Patient Health Advocates, I update databases of community resources for underserved populations in the Los Angeles area. My work as a patient health advocate helps address needs that often go unmet within a traditional clinic setting. As a patient health advocate, I volunteer and shadow physicians at UCLA clinics and conduct social caseworking with patients of all sociodemographic statuses, income levels, ethnicities, and ages. After meeting with patients, I utilize resource databases to connect patients with accessible resources located near their home and work zipcodes.

As a member of the cell team, I attended weekly modules and labs that focused on introductory cell research. These skills included cell culture, immunostaining, western blot, and poster design. I also worked in a team to design and carry out an independent research project. For this project, my group studied how varying antibiotic concentrations impacted E. coli survival and resistance. I came into the lab to create stock solutions and read absorbance values. I will be the cell team project manager next year where I will lead the cell team, organize labs, and assist students with their independent projects.

As a research assistant, I made rounds around UCLA health and visited different clinics. I would approach each patient who came in and talk to them about whether they would like to donate their biological samples to research. If a patient demonstrated interest, I walked them through a consent form and had them watch a video on the research initiative. I then recorded the number of patients that filled out the form each day and a summary of my shifts each day. I also helped to maintain iPads for patients who required it.
