In this European project, a chip has been designed to stimulate individual cells with microneedles and microsyringes. My task is to design, realize and test the microfluidic connections to the microsyringes. During my PhD research I studied cellular electroporation, a technique to transiently permeabilize the membrane of a cell with an applied electric field. This not only resulted in a better understanding of the effect of the membrane composition on the pore formation process, but also in the realization of two miniaturized systems; one to electroporate a.

During this assignment I investigated the patentability of ammonium detection for breath analysis with a microfluidic system. I specifically leaned to combine literature research with experimental work and to translate the results into a clear and useful report. This combination resulted in a patent, which definitely was a nice closure for me.

During my internship I studied the usefulness of a microfluidic cell sorter. Working independently was an important part of this project. The cultural differences and challenges were a very valuable experience - and resulted in a considerable experience with the French language. I also found it very interesting to see how high-quality research is performed.
