About Iris X.
My desire to practice nursing specifically stems from the role of nurses not only to treat a patient’s condition but also to understand them more personally, delivering better, more holistic care. The dual role in nursing that allows for skillful treatment of an individual and communication with patients through creativity and empathy draws me to this field. My particular interests lie in maternal and child health - I am a doctorate of nursing practice candidate in midwifery at Columbia University. My desire is to become a provider who can genuinely advocate for my patients and help combat the disparities the U.S. faces in this field today. While there is advanced medical technology and knowledge within the field of OB/GYN, there remains a great need for multilingual, multicultural providers and a diverse, inclusive healthcare workforce to address disparities among women of color. As someone who is fluent in Chinese, I've seen what a big difference language can play in the healthcare setting in advocating for patients and providing better care. Regardless of workplace setting, my long-term goal is to care for minority, underserved, and immigrant women and to play my part in combating the health disparities in our society that affect these groups of people.
