About Iris Stone, Phd
I am a Scientist I (Shanahan Research Fellow) at the Allen Institute in Seattle, WA. In this independent fellowship position, I develop computational neuroscience methods for the institute’s ever-increasing quantities of data in order to generate new scientific insights. I am particularly interested in methods for translational neuroscience and disease treatment and am currently working on projects to understand the temporal dynamics of neurological disorders, both from a genetic basis (Alzheimer’s disease) and in the context of neuromodulatory signaling (autism spectrum disorder).Previously, I earned my Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Princeton University, where I had a particular focus on quantitative and computational approaches to neuroscience. While there, I also earned a supplemental graduate Certificate in Statistics and Machine Learning (CSML) and was a member of the Quantitative Neuroscience Training Program (QNTP). In my research, I used statistical modeling and machine learning to quantify animal behaviors and their associated neural dynamics. Specifically, I developed latent variable models for identifying the dynamic structure underlying complex cognitive processes in mice, such as decision-making and exploration.I also have a strong interest in biotechnology and biomedicine and currently volunteer with Nucleate Seattle, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to empowering the next generation of biotech leaders through free educational programming and training. While in grad school, I also completed an internship at a biotech startup focused on using cerebral organoids to develop treatments for neurological diseases. Prior to that, I earned my B.S. in Physics from George Mason University, where I researched the use of organic and nanomaterials in biomedical applications. In undergrad I also ventured into entrepreneurship, founding a research/writing/editing company that I operated for five years. Iris Stone, Phd work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Director Of Partnerships
CurrentPart-time volunteer position with Nucleate, a non-profit organization focused on education, training and other programming for academic trainees interested in biotech research and entrepreneurship. In this role, I lead the Seattle chapter of the partnerships team to form connections with relevant industry partners in the community and identify sponsors to support our programs.
Co-Director Of Partnerships
Scientist I (Shanahan Research Fellow)
CurrentIndependent position working with Allen Institute investigators to develop quantitative methods in computational neuroscience with applications to the Allen's rich datasets. Includes affiliate status at the University of Washington.
Graduate Research Assistant
Working in the labs of Dr. Jonathan Pillow and Dr. Ilana Witten, I developed and applied latent variable models in order to identify the behavioral patterns and associated neural circuitry underlying complex cognitive processes in mice, including decision-making and exploration. I also developed mathematical tools for improving the efficiency of associated inference techniques. In the process I gained experience in statistical neuroscience, generative modeling, latent variable modeling, optimization techniques, unsupervised learning, time-series data analysis, and behavior quantification.
Assistant In Instruction
Worked as a graduate teaching assistant for NEU 201: Fundamentals of Neuroscience and NEU 437/537: Computational Neuroscience. My primary responsibility was to run precepts/labs as a supplement to classes, in which I reviewed course materials, provided homework help, and offered assistance with exam prep.
Computational Neuroscientist Intern
Adapted and applied statistical modeling techniques from physics and neuroscience to neural imaging data collected from human iPSC-derived organoids to identify “computational phenotypes” for use in developing pharmaceutical treatments for complex neurological diseases. Gained experience in statistical neuroscience, dynamical systems, SQL database management, neural data analysis, and neurological drug discovery techniques.
Founder And Owner/Operator
BloomRock was a company I founded to provide all-inclusive research and writing services for businesses and individuals. Capabilities spanned every facet of the technical and creative process, from data acquisition and analysis to content synthesis and composition. My team offered a suite of diverse skills to clients that included web scraping and data extraction; data analysis and organization; search engine optimization (SEO); HTML/CSS; WordPress; marketing; and business, technical, and scientific writing. A flexible approach to content creation enabled the company to translate large and complex data sets into a cohesive final product of clients' choosing, including journal articles, business reports, infographics, market analyses, product summaries, research papers, rankings, technical reports, and commerical websites. In the process I: - Managed a team of up to 12 independent contractors at a time- Worked with clients across North America as well as in Europe, Asia, and Africa- Brought in well into six figures in revenue year after year
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Worked as a research assistant for Dr. Patrick Vora in his quantum materials characterization lab, gaining experience in optical spectroscopy, nanomaterials, optics, low-temperature physics, and atomic force microscopy. My responsibilities included lab construction and maintenance, software programming (LabVIEW), instrumentation, sample preparation, data collection, and data analysis (MATLAB, python).Research projects included characterizing the optoelectronic properties of organic charge transfer crystals and single-walled carbon nanotubes as well as the low-temperature properties of transition metal dichalcogenides.
Learning Assistant
Undergraduate teaching assistant for five sections of MATH 105: Pre-calculus, providing tutoring, supplementary instruction, and exam prep assistance through weekly office hours to 100+ students.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)Analyzed high frequency (gamma) oscillations in the hippocampus (CA1 area) of live rats to determine how these waves encode and mnemonically store spatial and temporal information from the environment.
Freelance Writer And Researcher
Worked as a freelance writer on projects ranging from online copywriting to white papers, literature reviews, and corporate reports. Also provided research assistance for books and articles published in national periodicals.
