Government relations used to be about shaking hands and playing golf but, today, it is so much more interesting. Especially in my area of expertise, financial services, it is a whole new ballgame. In my 25 years of lobbying on the front lines of Washington, our numbers have greatly decreased and our work has vastly increased. First, we got smarter about trying to work with Washington, instead of against it in every instance. Often, that is a happier ending. Second, the Internet and social media happened: Now we can talk to our government leaders on their computers all day long. The strategy is so much more interesting and complex today.• We play offense and defense together, tailoring tactics to specific audiences, or individuals, or voting blocs. • We fight our competitors and work with them where we share narrow interests, building powerful coalitions of unity. • We make our case to the Hill and also in the states and hometowns of voters. We use graphs, charts, interactive videos and Infogram to demonstrate the accuracy and truth of our arguments.• We educate the media and, sometimes, we are the media – especially through social media, infomercials and email campaigns. We raise public awareness of our points of view, influence public opinion, and do it all in a respectful, bipartisan way. I have a great job. But, first, I have to explain all this to our clients. Sophisticated, worldly business leaders often have strong opinions about pending governmental actions that may affect how they do business.They want to get their messages to the right people in Washington, and they want to affect change – make a rule more practical so it can work as intended; be more specific to avoid unintentional unpleasant consequences, or broaden it to open up opportunities for growth and prosperity.Yes, I can help them to be heard and affect change. I know exactly where to start. And it won’t be on the golf course Probably.
