Qmul Pass Mentor

Mile End, England, United Kingdom

During my time working for QMUL Peer Assisted Study Support I provided 1-1 academic tutoring and support to groups of 20, 1st- 2nd and 3rd year Geography Undergraduates. This role involved:- Participating in a week long training course covering tutoring & mentorship organisation, techniques and strategy, safeguarding protocol, university services signposting, mock sessions and completing an assessment and safeguarding certification.- Supporting students digital module enrolment based on interests, field trips and prior experiences. This reduced the administrative burden for staff in explaining module contents and chasing up students for prompt selection. My support also enhanced positive student experience by stabilising module retention through students module awareness.- Helping students choose and access most relevant learning materials. Teaching practical note taking strategies. Providing guidance & directive questions to help skim reading and enable knowledge to be condensed and note organisation. This allowed students to cover a broader range of material in less time with better concision whilst learning processes conducive to heightened cognitive and memory based processing.- Teaching planning techniques and best structural practice in drafting essays. Coaching students to be more articulate, persuasive and evaluative in their writing as well as referencing with depth and breadth. This helped students stay organised, avoid last minute writing slogs and ensure high quality content, communication and citational practice in their essays.- Providing general guidance & administration regarding field trips, pre-enrolment, IT systems, life issues, international students matters, society engagement. When I wasn't able to generate solutions I would signpost students to the relevant university services. This gave students stable foundations to focus on and fully embrace their university experience by mitigating challenges and nipping issues in the bud.

Ba Human Geography Course Representative

Mile End, England, United Kingdom

2022 - 2023 Elected QMUL 3rd Year BA Human Geography Course Representative:- My manifesto addressed pressing school challenges and directed focus for my campaign. This alongside positive relationships with peers and staff resulted in my election.- I successfully campaigned for and supported transitioning teaching staff off compressed hours delivering hybrid learning, to return to a 100% in person taught program - as advertised, after overwhelming demands from fellow students.- I helped coordinate and participate in student/staff think tanks designed to reflect on academic experience and suggest recommendations on how it could be improved in the future. Additionally, I encouraged module convenors to implement mechanisms to ensure that the selection of module content was partially driven by students to maximise engagement and ensure up to date content.- I successfully campaigned for teachers to implement more innovative teaching practices such as: role play, situational thinking tasks, mini podcast making, provision of mixed media learning resources and more collaborative learning exercises. In addition, I advocated for and helped in the ideation & implementation of weekly, group-based dissertation workshops.- I helped reconfigure our extenuating circumstances process to enable early case flagging & interventions to prevent potential crises deteriorating into acute crises. This helped avoid & mitigate the negative experiences that accompany crisis management.- I held staff accountable over industrial strike actions and forced greater transparency in the decision making and communication of their decisions on industrial action.- I attended Student Staff Liaison Committee meetings prepped with student and personal feedback points. They enabled me to make contributions on a variety of student & staff matters. I thoughtfully considered and engaged other committee members talking points and helped them develop their ideas into meaningful actions.
