Human Performance Lab Research Intern
As an intern, I learned about the footwear industry and applied my biomechanics research skills to an area about which I am passionate. As a member of the Future Concepts Team, I conducted biomechanical and mechanical testing of running shoes and foam pucks to inform future footwear design. My team was exploring new ways to evaluate performance footwear and create running shoes that help the runner stay within their habitul movement path.
Graduate Research Assistant
I lead and collaborate on several projects investigating the mechanics of the Achilles and patellar tendons. For my primary project, I use ultrashort echo time magnetic resonance imaging (UTE-MRI) with bicomponent analysis to characterize structural differences in the Achilles tendon between young and older adults. Additionally, I work with other members of my lab on several projects that use shear wave tensiometry to measure Achilles and/or patellar tendon stress during treadmill walking and running and posturography. For these studies, I measure 1) tendon moment arms over a functional range of joint angles using ultrasound imaging and motion capture and 2) tendon cross-sectional areas using ultrasound and/or magnetic resonance imaging. I calculated moment arms from the raw ultrasound and motion capture data using a suite of Matlab functions that I developed. To compute cross-sectional areas, I used Materialise Mimics image processing software. Finally, I collaborate with researchers from the Multiscale Muscle Mechanophysiology (“M3”) lab at the University of Virginia on a project in which we are looking at differences in triceps surae muscle geometries between young and older adults.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
As an undergraduate I worked on two different research projects: the first a balance study and the second a validation study for cartilage segmentation software. For my first project, we were investigating the effects of subthreshold vibratory noise applied to the Achilles tendon on ankle proprioception. I helped develop the study protocol and created an automated testing procedure in MATLAB for a plantar flexion task in which subjects pushed against a force plate as various levels of subthreshold vibratory noise were applied to their ankle. For this task, I designed and constructed an A-frame mount to prop up the force plate in front of the seated subject to facilitate a neutral ankle angle during testing.My second project involved the assessment of femoral, tibial, and patellar cartilage morphology using semi-automated image segmentation via radial projection. We acquired MR images of three human knees and three observers segmented the femoral, tibial, and patellar knee cartilage in each slice of the image sets, once manually and three times using the semiautomated method. I reconstructed the segmented slices into 3D cartilage geometries and measured cartilage thickness throughout the cartilage volume. Finally, I compared segmentation time, cartilage thickness measurements, and intra- and inter-observer reproducibility between manual and semi-automated methods.
Undergraduate Teaching Assistant
I led a one-hour discussion section of 24 students twice weekly for a junior-level mechanical engineering course, Dynamic Systems. In this course, we analyzed mass-spring-damper systems in both time and frequency domains. We also discussed how to design basic PID controllers and use closed feedback loops to manipulate the behavior of dynamic systems. For each class, I led a review of new material and worked through a few examples with the entire class before fascilitating small-group, problem-solving sessions for the remainder of the discussion.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
During my time at the TCNL, we were conducting a clinical trial on an investigational neuromodulator device called the Portable Neurostimulator (PoNS) device. This device was being used in conjunction with a physical therapy program in the rehabilitation of people with traumatic brain injuries. I assisted both the physical therapists who fascilitated the intervention and the lab administrator who managed lab purchases and expenses.One of my primary responsibilities was to manage and maintain the database that stored subject data using Microsoft Access. This database was hosted on a SQL Server. Having no previous experience with databases, I taught myself SQL and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) in order to make changes to the structure of the database as needed. This involved modifying both the tables in which the data were stored (the "back end") and the forms used to enter data (the "front end"). As I familiarized myself with the subject database, I wrote a manual documenting procedures for both front-end use and back-end modification so that whoever took over the database when I left didn't have to start from scratch as I had. My work with the lab administrator involved reconciling lab purchasing card reports, processing subject stipends and reimbursements through UW Business Services, and ordering lab supplies. Additionally, I documented lab protocols and procedures in the lab handbook.
