“Mental pain is less dramatic than physical pain, but it is more common and also harder to bear. The frequent attempt to conceal mental pain increases the burden: it is easier to say 'My tooth is aching' than to say 'My heart is broken.’” – C.S LewisAs a child when I heard this, I dismissed it as I could not understand the pain of a broken heart more than a broken arm. However, after dealing with deaths of various loved ones and seeing its impact, it had sparked my curiosity for mental wellbeing. Specifically, to understand the human psyche and to help people. While exploring the field of grief psychology, I had chanced upon articles on how emotions affected one’s ability to work effectively. As I initially believed psychology was only for treating emotional turmoil, the articles had shed a new light unto the field of psychology. I was intrigued and discovered the field of Industrial and Organisational psychology which sparked a new interest for meWhile studying in Poly, I had participated in various activities that not only developed new skills but also helped to prove myself. One defining moment for me was participating in a Hackathon which was tasked to come up with ways to combat online scams. Through working with my group that consisted of upperclassmen, we had explored novel ways to apply what was taught in Contemporary Psychology to nudge consumers to be wary of potential scams. Our innovative solution had given us the edge and we had won. Through this, I had not only learnt how to work with strangers, but it also instilled a confidence in me to be able to apply what I had learnt into practice effectivelyAnother key moment for me was my internship with SPF’s Psychology Department. From being a part of their Paracounsellor Course as a facilitator, generating research studies for the organisation, producing various materials for their weekly dissemination and participating in data gathering, I have gathered a wealth of experience with them. My most memorable experience would have been the 2 research studies I had conducted. From those studies, I had not only shown myself as capable to lead a project on my own, but also competent to run my own studies.. Apart from that, I was grateful to my mentor for being there to answer any queries and was proactive to expose me to the various functions of psychology in SPFWith all being said, I am open to any new experience and willing to explore more into the field. If you have any opportunities for me, I would love to discuss it over a cup of coffee. Do contact me by dropping me a message over LinkedIn!
