Title: Poking the 800-pound GorillaAt 22 years old, I knew I'd branch off and start my own company(ies) someday. When this opportunity came along, I jumped in with both feet. The position:A chance to work in a business start-up inside of a Fortune 150 company. Between a few colleagues (now great friends) and myself, we were tasked to create a business unit to compete with Simpson Strong Tie (800-pound gorilla). From my point of view, "what a great opportunity to build a business against tough competition, without ME having to raise the capital!". As we brought product to market, set up distribution, worked on conversions with key lumber dealers, and generated interest with remodelers, builders, and architects, I quickly realized that "tough" was an understatement. Story #1: The only time I've been to Long Island... I encountered 3 different Simpson Strong Tie representatives simply conducting sales calls with a distribution partner. Yours Truly accounted for the ITW BCG Hardware "Sales Force" so you can imagine my bewilderment. Regardless, I think it's pretty damn cool waking up every morning to face the 800-pound gorilla. Story #2: Figuring out your calling...My boss and I are traveling home after a week full of "strategic" meetings, market assessments, and general sales calls. We've been traveling more than an NBA player. Needless to say, we are exhausted and our wins (we did have some I promise) came few and far between. Stuck in the airport on a delayed connection, I look at my boss (now friend) and said... "If we can do this, we can run our own companies". He chuckled and I remained quiet. It was blatantly obvious where he belonged.. running a successful lumber company. As his employee, I felt the need to tell him that:)Fast forward a few years later... he's running a successful lumberyard.In October of 2013, I moved on from ITW BCG Hardware to build 21 Handshake. I'm grateful to the life-long relationship and awesome experiences.
