About Isabel Carlisle

Isabel is founder and director of the Bioregional Learning Centre in Devon, UK. From 2017 the focus was on mapping South Devon for the green shoots of climate resilience. September 2019 saw BLC's first offer in leadership for systems change in the form of a Climate Resilience Learning Journey around the bioregion. The focus of the work now is on leading the Collective that is making the Doughnut for Devon: https://devondoughnut.org/ As we wrestle domains and indicators, scenarios and twin track citizen action and policy-making pathways towards revitalisation we are ever widening the circle of collaborators. This is regenerative economic practice in action! We are also now initiating a new arts, science, climate and community project called Voices of the Dart on our local river. Funded by South West Water, and with our team of partners, we will be prototyping citizen empowerment in water saving in a way that is fun and long-lasting. Isabel accidentally came to live in Devon in 2010 and designed and led schools and youth education programmes for Transition Network. She started her career as an archaeologist working abroad and then spent twenty years in the London art world as an art critic (The Times) and exhibitions curator (Royal Academy of Arts). She imagined and led the Festival of Muslim Cultures that took place across Britain through 2006. Her time in the art-world gave her experience of large-scale project management and an arts-based understanding of how culture shifts and world views change. She honed her curating skills in the challenging work of setting up and delivering the Festival of Muslim Cultures. Working at the intersection of politics and religion is like walking a tight rope and support came from building a strong stakeholder team. She is now addressing whole-systems change towards sustainability at the regional level, linking grassroots innovation to existing political and economic structures. We are now at the end of the first three years of nudging whole-systems change towards sustainability at a regional level. We are focusing on how citizens can get more involved in taking care of food, energy, water and waste, as well as looking at the potential for more resilient local economies and ecologies. We are calling our work base a virtual Learning Centre because every step of the way is about asking questions, applying design and creativity to wicked problems, and coming up with collaborative solutions. Now we are entering our second phase which is skilling up leaders in systems change and moving towards a multi-stakeholder resilience summit for South Devon.
