September 13-28th in The City of Grand Rapids. This opportunity means so much to me. I have been going to ArtPrize since it started when I was 10 years old. I have been going to ArtPrize since it started when I was 10 years old. It was always a dream of mine to participate. 15 years later I now have art and environmental degrees from University of Michigan and hundreds of hours of painting experience. I am a recent graduate of the University of Michigan, where I double majored in Art and Design and Environmental Studies. At school, I specialized in painting and printmaking along with my interests in sustainability and conservation ecology. When my 2020 study abroad plans and summer internship were canceled for due to the pandemic, I decided to take advantage of the time I suddenly had available. I started an Etsy page to begin selling my artwork, something I have always wanted to do. While… Show more I am a recent graduate of the University of Michigan, where I double majored in Art and Design and Environmental Studies. At school, I specialized in painting and printmaking along with my interests in sustainability and conservation ecology. When my 2020 study abroad plans and summer internship were canceled for due to the pandemic, I decided to take advantage of the time I suddenly had available. I started an Etsy page to begin selling my artwork, something I have always wanted to do. While Etsy is an enjoyable way to create and sell work, I have dreams of selling my art in galleries across the country and world. Since beginning my Etsy page, I have been commissioned to paint dozens of projects including a mural for Nutcase Vegan Meats located on 44th street and many smaller paintings. I also sold some of my pieces in a Holiday Artisan Market at a prestigious Modern Art and Furniture store in Grand Rapids called Design Quest. I am continuing to sell work on my “IzMaters” Etsy page and paint by commission. Show less

I have worked for Julie since the spring of 2018. I have helped her organize and manage the Labadie collection by labeling, cleaning, compiling new serials and documents, and adding them to the collection and library website. I inscribed donations and restored outdated storage methods among a number of other library-related tasks. When COVID-19 forced all of us students to move home my coworkers and I continued to help Julie by acquiring new items for the collection from various sellers. Show less

As a Planet Blue Student Leader (PBSL) I worked as a part-time employee of Student Life at the University of Michigan. I acted as a peer educator to promote sustainable living behaviors such as composting and recycling in the dorms. I worked with other PBSLs in small teams to implement year-long projects that support campus sustainability goals. The project I worked on was related to planning a native garden on campus. As a group, we spread awareness about composting and other sustainability initiatives across campus. We tabled on the University of Michigan Diag and distributed sustainable materials such as reusable sporks and compost bags. We also educated many students through Planet Blue Ambassador training and facilitated composting audits at dining and residential halls. Show less

I worked as a Residential Assistant during the Stamps 2018 summer programs for high school students interested in art and design. The camps were to help students build their portfolios and get a taste of the college experience. One camp program (Portfolio Prep) was two weeks and another (BFA Preview) was three. As an RA I escorted the students around campus and to class, scheduled fun activities, and help them acclimate to the college environment.

I had the pleasure to work for CHEJ for 9 months. I initially applied for the position because the organization is founded and run by Environmental Icon, Lois Gibbs. Lois spoke at the University of Michigan in 2020 about her work with Love Canal and her contributions to the environmental justice movement. I've been a long term fan of her work since I learned about Superfund Sites in high school. In this role I was trained by CHEJ organizers in the basic organizing process. I worked closely with Lois Gibbs, and participated in community leader meetings. I contacted groups and individuals who have contacted CHEJ and learn about their current status and needs, and provide basic organizing direction, and then report back to organizing staff on the contacts. I worked with organizing staff to develop information on patterns and trends in CHEJ's organizing assistance; and Follow-up contacts with grassroots activists who are organizing in their own communities. Each week I would participate in 2-5 meetings with the CHEJ staff to where we would discuss and update one another on our work. In my role I also prepared and publish blogs to the CHEJ website, and managed and posted on CHEJ social media accounts. Due to my background in art and design I was asked to create graphics for Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. I designed logos and graphics for #MakePollutersPay week of action. Over the course of my internship I became the leading design intern and creative director of the 40th anniversary. Nearing the end of my internship, I was flown out to Washington D.C. to meet everyone and help organize and facilitate the 40th anniversary party. We make our vegan meat product in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and distribute it across the country to over 60 stores and restaurants. Since the company was founded my roles have varied from production to distribution to creating graphic designs of coupons and sale signs. Since the company was founded my roles have varied from production to distribution to creating graphic designs of coupons and sale signs. I have assisted in making and testing batches and have driven across Michigan to sell the product. During the summer of 2017, I traveled to supermarkets around West and Northern Michigan to demo our products to consumers. When Covid-19 hit in early 2020 I moved back home from Ann Arbor and have assisted my parents with any marketing and graphic design related needs.
