About Isabel Thomas

Isabel is a science writer and the author of a galaxy of books for young audiences. They include Moth: An Evolution Story and Fox: A Circle of Life Story, both illustrated by Daniel Egnéus, and both winners of the prestigious AAAS/Subaru Prize for Excellence in Science Books (2020 and 2023). Her books have also been shortlisted for the Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize, ASE Science Book of the Year, the Blue Peter Book Awards, the Deutscher Jungendliteraturpreis and the English 4-11 Picture Book Awards. Isabel writes for science magazines including The Week Junior Science + Nature and regularly works with organisations to consult on and create STEM outreach resources, prepare market intelligence reports, deliver science communication training and host STEM events for young audiences. Recent clients include the Darwin Tree of Life Project at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, Wellcome Trust, the University of Oxford, and the BBC.Isabel is a passionate and engaging speaker on science and access to STEM education. Recent festival and media appearances include BBC Women’s Hour, Cheltenham Literature Festival, Cheltenham Science Festival, Bradford LitFest, the AAAS Conference 2023, Oxford Literary Festival, Paris Book Fair, Emirates Literature Festival, The Naked Scientists, Fun Kids Radio and a week-long series on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.Isabel studied Human Sciences at the University of Oxford and has an MPhil in Education Research from the University of Cambridge. Her academic research focuses on integrated science|art education and tackling inequalities in STEM education and careers.
