Control: I transferred my little sister and me to a new school right before my junior year. I did this to broaden our horizons. All we had ever known was catholic schooling and were frankly, unhappy with it. Not to mention, because at this time, covid was at its peak, our health and safety were my top concern. Learning that our first school wasn’t taking this outbreak seriously, I knew I needed a change. Service: I was the lead graphic designer for an organization called Story Box Books. This organization was made and dedicated to raising money to buy books for children who were less fortunate. With Story Box Books I felt that I was actually doing something to help people who are in need. Being one of the first members of this service group I was able to help it grow. We had gone from having 3 original members to multiplying it by 10 in the following years. By going to different groups in our school like the drama club, the wrestling team, and other clubs, we were able to find many people who were also passionate and willing to help with our cause. With the different social media accounts, I made and fundraisers held we were able to raise upwards of $1000 for Story box books in the span of 3 months. Add Value: I started my own candy-making business to get first-hand experience to see what it was like to be an entrepreneur. I spent upwards of 5 hours a week making hundreds of chocolates all whilst working two other jobs. Monthly, I made about $500 in sales which totaled to about $350 in revenue. Working by myself and for myself showed me how to push myself to my limits, and for this reason, I was able to succeed in my small business and be able to manage school, clubs, and other jobs all at the same time. Through this experience, I learned so many life-changing skills, hands-on.
