As a GSS scholar I have been given the amazing opportunity to engage in a two summer research program. The program has connected me with an on-site project based in Madagascar with a focus on environmental sustainability. While there I have formed a research project working with sea grass transplantation techniques and developing an educational curriculum inspired by local communities on the importance of these techniques. This project involves working closely with research assistants and PhD candidates all with extensive knowledge and experience on the effects of climate change within the Madagascar ecosystem. Not only does the project allow me to experience a new culture and lifestyle, it has provided me with hands on field research experience and lab skills.

As an intern with Cactus Park Elemantary, I was responsible for researhcing and applying to a variety of government and private grants to secure long term funding for the school's newly founded community garden. My role also included supporting the development and ongoing maintenace of the garden which I accomplished by designing a comprehensive maintenace plan to be used by the school staff and students. Additionally I was responisble for designing multiple lesson plans for the students involving the garden which were them implemented in their environmental arts class. Alongside these responsibilities I was conducting independent research on the uses and benefits of a school garden within food deserts, which Cactus Park was located in. My data was collected through surveys and literature reviews and compiled into an oral presenation and research paper as part of my senior thesis for the University of Washington Program on the Environment.
