Hello, I am Bella Capell, a senior at Edison High and the Center for Advanced Research and Technology (CART) . I have spent four years in the engineering pathway and have taken video game design and engineering classes at CART. In the fall, I plan to attend UC Berkeley studying chemical engineering. My goal after graduating is to work in special effects.While at Cal, I plan on taking on a minor in theater, specifically technical theater to grow my experience in realistic effects and hands on work. I started to become interested in off-stage work in middle school after costuming the play The Outsiders. As I explored more in stagecraft it solidified my interest. I wanted to combine stagecraft with engineering and landed on chemical engineering. In my engineering class, I was assigned a project where I had to interview someone in the field I wanted to go into. I got two interviews. The first was a man who did special effects out of Texas for Netflix, movies and various music videos. The second was a professor of explosive chemistry from England. Both interviews were valuable as they showed me the long term path of my career goal.During COVID, I had time to really pursue my interests; I had done costuming before COVID but never got into sewing. With my mostly untouched sewing machine, I started to sew between online school classes. Now that I am back in school, I have been the costume designer for the past two Edison shows. I have also competed in a competition, winning second place for costume design. As well as designing costumes, I have started to dabble in SFX makeup. Also, over COVID I started to work with an Arduino to learn basic programming skills, earned myself a HAM Radio license, and learned to build radios. I have always been involved in school. The longest being various chapters of Model UN. First starting the Y & G statewide program in the valley in a small delegation I was the president of. After our first year, I ran for a larger statewide leadership position as president of the international court of justice and won. I had to take on many duties including giving a speech to an audience of over 2000 of my peers. I have also done lots of volunteer work with ValleySTEM, where we teach kids in underfunded areas hands-on lessons in STEM. This experience with volunteering got me my job as a math instructor at Mathnasium. At Mathnasium, I work 12 hours a week teaching kids personalized math lessons and helping with homework. Both ValleySTEM and Mathnasium are rewarding jobs as I get to directly help and inspire kids.
