As Direct Care Staff at Craig's Doors - A Housing Association, I worked at a congregate wet shelter in Amherst, MA, providing assistance to the unhoused population of the area and assuring that the shelter was functioning smoothly. My responsibilities included everything from the basics of cleaning the shelter to more complicated situations such as deescalating interpersonal disputes between guests, interacting with law enforcement and medical care providers, and writing incident reports of conflicts at the shelter. All employees utilized a trauma informed approach to caregiving.

As a cashier at State Street Fruit Store, I gained valuable customer service experience with my local community and truly felt the impact of my work. The store was one of the only local grocers that took EBT/Food Stamps, and attracted a vulnerable customer base with high financial need. I learned how to communicate productively and effectively in a workplace environment and established relationships with regulars that I uphold to this day. I was responsible for opening or closing the store each shift, as well as managing the store often as the sole cashier. I organized, stocked, and maintained the cafe portion of the store, learning how to accurately prepare and produce customer requests while adhering to their preferences/restrictions.
