Foster professional skills in psychology and neuroscience working alongside the Karen M.Gil Fall 2024 cohort. Learn client advocacy through the empowerment model and develop client service programs as an intern at the Orange Country Rape Crisis Center (OCRCC). Complete a semester-long research project for the OCRCC.

Assist RNs with routine examinations and procedures on Children’s 7 at UNC main hospital. Provide care to patients as outlined by physicians and assist in daily activities of living such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and ambulation. Measure and record vital signs and report trends to RN. Assist in specimen collection, skin preps/scrubs, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, wound care, range of motion exercises, and postural drainage. Perform cryostat slices of perfused mice brain samples to be used in immunohistochemistry staining via IBA-1 to locate microglia in experimental mice exposed to high altitude conditions. Microglial populations analyzed to support research on affect of altitude on neuroinflammation and neurological deficits. Perform immunoperoxidase staining via IBA-1 on brain tissue for analysis. Compile and summarize peer-reviewed research pertaining to TREM2 and apolipoprotein phenotype affect on Alzheimers and traumatic brain injury to aid in grant proposal writing. Create graphics for grant proposal explaining experimental design.

Work with young and inexperienced swimmers to gain comfort and competency in the water. Techniques focus on floatation skills, proper swimming kinesthetics, and comfort submerging face underwater.

Operator at two pool locations responsible for opening and closing facilities and maintaining pool chlorine, pH, and fill to health standards. Takes charge in emergency situations with first-aid, CPR, and defibrillator training. Performs lifeguarding tasks and maintains facility cleanliness.
